COLUMBIA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - It has been more than two years since Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his wife and son.

His legal team has been trying to get that ruling overturned since.

The state is now asking South Carolina’s Supreme Court for 120 more days to respond to Murdaugh’s appeal.

Future first-time voters in South Carolina may not have as much of a problem registering as past ones, thanks to a promising development.

This is the second time the state has asked for an extension. The deputy attorney general says they had to restructure their appellate team and that’s why they need more time to respond.

Their response is currently due Thursday, April 10th, but they are asking the South Carolina Supreme Court to allow them until August 8th instead.

Murdaugh’s attorney - Dick Harpootlian - responded to the state in an email.

He says “We will not consent”, in reference to the state’s request for this extension.

Murdaugh’s legal team filed a formal response as well. They say, if the court grants another 120 day extension that would result in the state having a full year to file their response to Murdaugh’s appeal.

The convicted murderer’s attorneys say they are not aware of any case where the state has been given that much time to respond.

Their initial appeal was based on the claim that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill, tampered with the jury of Murdaugh’s murder trial.
